Soy That's What it Is?

When Everett was nine months old he started throwing up every day or every other day. We saw 2 different doctors who suggested he had a sensitive gag reflex and the other said he had reflux. I wasn't convinced, the reflux meds did not work and the throwing up continued. I started thinking maybe he was allergic to dairy (since I knew a lot of kids who are) so I started substituting soy milk. That he threw up immediately. I talked to a friend at a family get together and she said, "maybe he is allergic to soy" which I had never even considered. We started avoiding it and he does better but still throws up about every 4-5 days. So I think there might be something else he is not tolerating. Other symptoms he has which might or might not be related are he coughs every day and it is common for him to have a gurgle in his throat. And randomly he broke out in hives last Sunday ( I gave him corn chex for the first time, but who knows??, I am scared to give him anything new!). Anyway, maybe there are others of you that have dealt with kids with these symptoms. Since we are not going to be able to see an allergist until the summer (insurance reasons) any advice would be great.

Hey, I know soy and gluten allergies can be related - maybe he's allergic to wheat gluten as well. Here's an article for you, but there are plenty out there. Good luck!!

My little brother is allergic to corn, which includes corn syrup. Otherwise I'd guess gluten too.

Poor little guy. You should read about this family that was on Oprah. (you can probably search Oprah Going Green 101- that's where I read it). Their little boy was coughing... and they learned it was their household cleaners. They switched to natural cleaners and he has been fine since. Worth a try?? Also, just because one reflux medicine didn't work doesn't mean that it isn't reflux. Zach has reflux, and a few friends' babies, and different meds work on different babies. And even when the medicine is working, he still throws up sometimes....

Hmmm. All good advice. I am learning so much about food allergies. I will give these a try. Poor kid. Thanks all.

man on man...there is always something huh? I hope you figure it out. He's such a cute kid! Congrats on your challenge. Just found out my friend Emily was one of the many involved. Small world. Count me in next time... I could use the motivation. Hope all is well.

I'm not sure there will be another challenge for me. This last one was BRUTAL. I was going to take it easy, but found out I am too competitive (especially when my brother is involved). But I will pass on the message to you if I ever get one. Emily who? Not my sister-in-law Emily?

Hey Nat,
I asked Dan.
First he needs to know. Is he gaining weight? Or losing? How much is he eating? When does he throw up in the morning or night? Does he have diarrhea? What does his stool look like? Does he throw up food? It is hard to say what it is really. The coughing goes with reflux. When he throws up how is his state of mind is he alert, not moving much, etc.
When I was in Boston, Mon threw up a lot too. I thought she was sick took her temps nothing. I kept my eyes on her and saw that she has been eating a lot of food everyone were feeding her from junk to other things and I limit her food and only feed when she was hungry and not give her to much junk that she likes and she stop throwing up. Good luck it is sad when our kids don't feel good and they can't tell us.
